October 11 marks the start of a second season of CW’s Riverdale. As fans prepare themselves for what is to come Wednesday night, let’s take a walk down memory lane and reflect on what happened last season.
Fans were introduced to the show on January 26, and it became an instant hit. Based on the all-American Archie Comics, creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa took a risk when putting the comics onto the screen. “The show is known as sexy Archie,” Sacasa joked while doing an interview at Comic Con. However, this stylistic transition in writing was not the only risk he took.
When casting a new show, casting directors are desperate to find a way to hook viewers. Typically, this means casting actors who are already well-known in Hollywood. However, Sacasa and executive producer Sarah Shechter decided that they cared more about who was the best fit for the role, as opposed to who was already a celebrity. The casting process took about six months, and Sacasa and Schecter were scared they would not find the right cast.
They found refuge in new actor KJ Apa (Archie), recent NYU graduate Camilla Mendes (Veronica), Lili Reinhart (Betty), and The Sweet Life of Zack and Cody actor Cole Sprouse. The show started out with a mystery: main character Cheryl Blossom’s twin brother, Jason Blossom, was murdered.
Throughout the rest of the series, the Riverdale characters sought to figure out who killed Blossom. The murderer was revealed during the season finale to be Jason and Cheryl’s father, Clifford Blossom. When Cheryl finds out about this betrayal, she goes to confront her father only to find that he had hung himself. Cheryl was not the only Archie teen suffering from parental problems during the final episode. The episode ends with Archie and his father Fred having dinner at recurring local hotspot Pop’s. While Archie goes to the bathroom, an intruder enters the diner, and shoots Fred before leaving. The episode ends there, leaving all to wonder what will become of Mr. Andrews, and whether the shooting was incidental or purposeful.
Sacasa has said that the storyline of the show will start right where the previous season left off, saying that the viewers will know Mr. Andrews fate early in the episode. The fans wait in anticipation to see what will become of their favorite characters, as well as meet new characters during this season of the beloved drama.
