As spring begins and Summit High School enters the last two months of the school year, students should look forward to participating in several events, all thanks to Student Leadership, whose work is aimed at lightening up the load heading into exam season.

Student Leadership is divided into the Culture and Policy committees, which work together to organize events at Summit High School.

Student Leadership is one of the largest clubs at Summit High School, having replaced SHS’ Student Council in an effort to promote inclusivity and engage more students. The club is divided into two sectors: Policy and Culture, which work together to help make the school a better, safer space for students. While the Policy group works directly with administration to create and implement policies, the Culture group is focused on organizing fun events for students.

“In my view, Culture focuses on bringing excitement and engagement to the student body, while Policy establishes the structure and guidelines to ensure these activities are effective and inclusive for all,” said Student Leadership vice president Kate Eldredge.

The spring is a very important time for Student Leadership. The Culture group is currently planning Prom, Springfest, Commemoration, and movie night, which will all be held in the next two months. The Policy group, on the other hand, is working to organize a Student Leadership retreat to Estes Park, where students will be able to bond.

“Our short-term goals for the club are to finalize and begin promoting our spring events as well as complete our second-semester policy proposals,” Kate said. “Our long-term goals are more complex and still a work in progress.”

She hopes that Student Leadership will continue to positively impact the SHS community, even though the task is challenging. Kate says that if the club had unlimited resources and funding, they would love to host a Wish Week in which children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation could be celebrated at SHS.

“During this week, we could invite one or a few children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, fundraise for their wish, surround them with love, and celebrate philanthropy and kindness at SHS,” she explained.

For now, however, SHS will have fun celebrating the hard work that Student Leadership has put into creating a fun environment for students, especially as the 2024-2025 school year comes to a close.
